Donation Yoga Class

January 13, 2018
It’s already been a full week since Amanda was admitted to Kapi’olani Medical Center!

Highlights:

  • They were transferred to a new, much larger room with a view so Amanda can at least enjoy some Hawaiian sunshine through the windows!

  • They attended a Bingo party with other hospital residents with exciting prizes like nail polish and cucumber face masks.

  • They’ve had several visits from friends (or friends of friends) in the area, and are the beneficiaries of a loaner guitar (for Amanda) and bicycle (for Myles), giving them both something new and fun to do!

  • They’ve started receiving Amazon packages and Amanda is quite excited at the anticipated arrival of mouthwash

  • Myles has had the opportunity to get out and about a bit in Honolulu, including continuing his national tour of craft breweries, and starting to learn to surf.  Meanwhile, Amanda is becoming an expert with colored pencils and received a lei-making lesson.

  • The outpouring of support through calls, texts, emails, cards, donations, and well wishes has been overwhelming in the best sense of the word. Thank you to all for your love and generosity!

Health update:
Amanda and Myles celebrated a medical hurdle by having a “do not disturb” notice on the door during nighttime hours! That’s right, Mom and baby are doing so well that the family is allowed to sleep thru the night.

Amanda is now hooked up to an IV only twice a day, and has her vitals checked every two hours. In between she’s able to sit outside for brief periods, and take an occasional wheelchair ride down to the hospital coffee shop.

Next up:
Amanda’s Mom will soon be on her way to visit! Along with the comfort of having a loved one at their side, she’ll be able to bring some clothes and other personal belongings (who can survive a hospital stay without a melodica?) from their apartment for some added comfort from home.

For added excitement...

A brief and thankfully false missile alert threw everyone into a temporary panic this morning while patients and staff gathered in the basement. It’s a confirmed false alarm, but what a way to keep things interesting!

One week down...

On the News

Everyone' s favorite temporary Hawaiian couple appeared on WGN Chicago's midday news on Monday, January 15, to share their experience during the false missile alert over the weekend. Thanks to brother-in-law "AudioBob" Mihlfried for hooking these on-camera cuties up with the producers. Watch the segment on WGNTV.com.

3lbs and counting!

From Amanda, 2/5:

Aidan is doing amazing! The doctors tell us daily what a rockstar he is and how much improvement he's making! As of today he weighs 3lbs 1oz; he's off his IV drip; still hooked up to several monitors, feeding tube and breath support (to be expected at his stage); his feedings continually increase (my milk with extra calories added); and we are each holding him twice a day! He looks amazing and we are just so happy every time we see his little face and body. He flails around a lot and is already quite opinionated 😊 Strong and feisty, that's our boy!

A little about Myles & me: I'm doing really well! I had my 2wk post partum follow-up appointment in which my doc here said everything looks good and to go ahead and resume my normal physical routine. I gladly obliged and went to my first yoga class in over a month! Thank you to CorePower Yoga for a lovely (and free) class for my return! It did wonders for my body and spirit! Myles, on the other hand, is dealing with a pinched nerve in his shoulder and is in a lot of pain; he's been to a minute clinic, urgent care, a massage therapist and physical therapist, but with no real pain relief. He may seek acupuncture or a chiropractor if nothing changes. Other suggestions...? We recently went on a helicopter excursion, thanks to Andy Stenz for taking us along on his aerial photo assignment! Managing to get out of the hospital here and there to get fresh air and enjoy our surroundings as much as possible.

It's time for another round of thank you's to be said....Myles and I are SO fortunate that while we are on this unexpected Hawaiian adventure we have a place to stay, a way to get around town, and so much support from everyone!! Deliveries and donations continue to come and we could not be more grateful, it really eases the enormity of this situation and allows us to focus on each day without as much worry mounting up ❤. Please know how much we appreciate everything, even if I haven't been able to make personal contact.

Thank you for your positive energy, it's working!!! Our love and gratitude.
